CV NEWS FEED // Juniors and seniors in high school who enter the ninth annual Newman Guide College Scholarship Contest by Feb. 18 have a chance to win thousands of dollars, the organization announced Jan. 10.

The scholarship offers $5,000 to a devout Catholic planning to attend a school listed in the Newman Guide. The Newman Guide outlines Catholic colleges that remain faithful to the Magisterium, the teaching authority of the Catholic Church, in their curriculum and campus culture. The guide ranks colleges as “gold” or “silver” in categories such as spiritual life, theology and philosophy programs, and whether the professors take an oath of fidelity to the Magisterium.

Certain participating colleges will extend the scholarship over for years, supplying the students with $20,000 towards their college tuition.

To be eligible for scholarships, students must fulfill several requirements, including submitting a brief written statement expressing their interest in a Catholic education and formation. This year, an essay is not required to participate in the competition. Instead, the winner will be chosen through a random number generator.

The Cardinal Newman Society was founded in 1993 to promote and defend Catholic education. Their website states that they serve Catholic families by “advocating and supporting fidelity to the teaching of the Catholic Church across all levels and methods of Catholic education; identifying and promoting clear standards of Catholic identity and best practices in Catholic education; and recognizing exemplary Catholic educators and institutions committed to truth and the integral formation of their students.”
