La Cigüeña De La Torre published on InfoVaticana.com (20 December) a photo of the Seminary of San José Major in La Plata, Argentina.
La Plata (924,000 inhabitants) is the capital of the province of Buenos Aires in Argentina. It is only about 64 kilometres south-east of Buenos Aires.
The most recent archbishops of La Plata were Monsignor Héctor Rubén Aguer from 2000 to 2018; Tucho Fernández from 2018 to 2023; and Monsignor Gabriel Antonio Mestre from July 2023 to May 2024.
The photo published by La Cigüeña De La Torre shows the seminary on the day it was visited by the then Secretary of the Congregation for the Clergy, Monsignor Celso Morga, who said he was "pleasantly surprised by the good formation that future priests receive here". The photo was taken on 31 May 2012.
Monsignor Héctor Aguer was Archbishop of La Plata at the time.
There were almost a hundred seminarians from different dioceses living in the seminary, 40 of them from La Plata.
As soon as he could, Francis sent Monsignor Aguer into retirement and appointed Tucho Fernández in his place.
During Tucho's disastrous five years in La Plata, the seminary went downhill. Today there are only five seminarians left from La Plata and another five from Mar del Plata. Next year, two seminarians from each diocese will be admitted.
The once glorious seminary is on the verge of extinction.
In order to maintain the building, which occupies an entire city block, an architecture and design firm has been hired to carry out some renovations and repairs as payment for the use of the facilities.
On Saturday 28 December, the new archbishop, Monsignor Gustavo Carrara, will take office in La Plata.
"Either they leave this harmful and sterile [stone age] 'progressivism' or the closure is imminent," commented La Cigüeña De La Torre.
