CD Projekt Red CEO Michal Nowakowski still thinks the developer needs to win back fans with The Witcher 4 after the controversy surrounding Cyberpunk 2077.
Nearly six years on from its initial release, Cyberpunk 2077 remains one of the most notorious video game launches ever. The futuristic RPG from The Witcher devs was hotly anticipated before arriving, but it was full of bugs and ran poorly on last-gen consoles, forcing Sony to temporarily pull the game from its store entirely.
In the years that followed, CDPR released plenty of updates and DLC that smoothed out the experience and added features that fans were expecting, and the game is now considered one of the best RPGs ever made.
However, despite the turnaround, Michal Nowakowski still doesn’t think the company’s reputation has fully recovered.
Witcher 4 boss admits devs “lost the faith of some people” with Cyberpunk
“I’m not 100 percent convinced we went through the full redemption arc,” he told Edge’s Knowledge newsletter, as spotted by GameRadar+.
“I’m convinced that we lost the faith of some people indefinitely, and that’s a fair thing. But I do hope we will be able to make it back – if not with The Witcher 4, then with whatever comes next.”
CD Projekt RedIn the same interview, Nowakowski called the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 a “heartbreaking” time for the developer, as he considered CDPR’s reputation for quality as its “biggest asset.”
But there is one positive that came out of the whole ordeal, as he believes the studio has been “left with seasoned, battle-hardened veterans – leaders who were able to carry a different kind of challenge on their shoulders.”
There is currently no release date for The Witcher 4, but we know it will follow Ciri following her transformation into a fully-fledged witcher. The devs have also announced a new DLC for The Witcher 3, Songs of the Past, that is expected to set up the sequel.
