Celtic 0-1 Rangers Stats: Naderi Seals Back-to-Back Old Firm Derby Wins for Rangers

Rangers followed up last week’s thumping victory at Ibrox with another win over rivals Celtic, thanks to Ryan Naderi’s first-half goal.

Ryan Naderi scored the only goal as Rangers beat Celtic 1-0 to claim their second Old Firm derby victory in the space of a week.

Celtic were hammered 3-0 at Ibrox in the Scottish League Cup last week, and they fell foul of their old rivals once again on Sunday, this time on home turf at Celtic Park.

Rangers, meanwhile, have now tallied up five straight league wins and are within two points of Celtic at the summit of the Scottish Premiership.

Martin O’Neill said after last week’s defeat that this time out would be much different, and Celtic were at least on the front foot from the get-go.

Celtic wanted a penalty when Camilo Durán was bundled into by Emmanuel Fernandez, before the Rangers defender received a booking for another tackle on the hosts’ Colombian attacker.

Auston Trusty thought he had volleyed Celtic into a sixth-minute lead, but the goal was disallowed for Liam Scales having strayed offside.

Fernandez was fortunate to escape a second booking when he scythed down Benjamin Nygren, before Kiernan Tierney crashed a thunderous effort against the crossbar, but Rangers then struck against the run of play in the 33^rd minute.

Celtic cleared a corner only as far as Kim Min-Su, whose dipping strike was parried out by Viljami Sinisalo, and Naderi was on hand to finish into a largely open net.

Rangers were inches away from going 2-0 up when Djeidi Gassama clipped a chip against the post, with Cameron Carter-Vickers then making a brilliant block from Kevin Kelsy’s follow-up.

Colby Donovan seemed all set to drag Celtic level just after half-time, but Ivor Pandur made a superb save to keep out a powerful header.

Kim dragged wide at the end of a mazy run as groans went around the home crowd, and Celtic were almost further behind when Dan Neil’s strike almost resulted in Naderi bundling in at the far post.

Celtic’s luck was in when Olwethu Makhanya’s sublime strike was disallowed by VAR for handball in the 74th minute, but the Hoops could not make their reprieve count.

Mcinnes Into Rangers’ Old Firm Record Books

Derek McInnes made a poor start at Rangers, but his team are now firmly clicking into gear.

The former Hearts boss has become only the second Rangers manager to win both of his first two Old Firm derbies against Celtic, after Graeme Souness in 1986.

McInnes is also just the third manager in Rangers history to have faced Celtic twice on the spin in all competitions and won both games, after Scot Symon (1960) and Walter Smith (1998).

This defeat snapped a 13-game winning run for Celtic in the league, which was their longest such streak coming into a top-flight clash with Rangers since March 2017 (22).

It means Celtic also fell short of winning 14+ consecutive league matches for the first time since that 22-game run in 2017, a streak that was ended by a 1-1 home draw with Rangers.

Celtic may have started well, but this was a largely flat performance. They had just five shots, getting only one on target, and created chances worth a combined 0.71 expected goals.

Rangers had three times as many attempts (15) and got eight of them on target, and they have plenty of momentum heading into the international break.
