Tanzanian opposition leaders Freeman Mbowe and Tundu Lissu have been released on bail after being arrested ahead of a protest in Dar es Salaam, according to the Party for Democracy and Progress, also known as Chadema. While Lissu was taken from his home, Mbowe, Chadema’s chairman, was arrested on the street. Following their bail, Mbowe chose to remain in police custody until the other Chadema protesters, arrested during the demonstration, were freed. Chadema had organized the demonstrations to protest the alleged killings and abductions of government critics, including senior Chadema member Ali Mohamed Kibao, who was found dead on September 7, a day after he was abducted by unknown persons. Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has since ordered an investigation into his death. However, Chadema has accused security forces of being involved in his murder.
