Chaos on major California freeway as pedestrian mowed down leading to mass congestion

A pedestrian was killed after being struck on a major Southern California freeway early Wednesday, triggering a massive traffic jam during the morning commute.

The deadly crash was reported shortly after 3:30 a.m. on the westbound 210 Freeway near Citrus Avenue in Azusa, according to the California Highway Patrol incident log.

A SigAlert was issued minutes later as authorities shut down the westbound lanes, bringing traffic to a crawl.

The carpool lane reopened around 4:41 a.m., but the remaining lanes stayed closed as investigators worked the scene.

The victim’s identity and what led to the crash were not immediately known.

CHP announced shortly after 6:20 a.m. that the freeway had been cleared and all lanes were reopened.
