'Cheeky' one-year-old baby boy with rare skull condition successfully undergoes world-first surgery

A baby boy from Derbyshire has made medical history by becoming the world's inaugural patient to undergo pioneering treatment for a severe skull abnormality using revolutionary springs crafted from a special metal alloy.

Rory Potter, now aged one, received his diagnosis of severe sagittal craniosynostosis, a rare condition in which the skull bones fuse prematurely before birth, shortly following his arrival in April 2025.


Medical teams at Great Ormond Street Hospital and University College London selected the Chesterfield child as the first child to receive the newly developed nitinol springs, which are fashioned from a nickel-titanium combination, offering what specialists describe as "super-elastic" properties.

A year following his groundbreaking procedure, the youngster is thriving and reaching all his developmental milestones, according to his family.

The condition causes the skull to fuse prematurely, resulting in an elongated shape from front to back whilst remaining narrow from side to side. This creates insufficient space for proper brain development.

Standard treatment over the previous twenty years has involved skull reshaping operations, typically performed during an infant's initial months of life.

These procedures have utilised stainless steel springs to progressively expand the gap between skull bones, creating room for the brain to grow and enabling new bone formation.

The newly developed nitinol springs mark a significant advancement on this established approach.

Each device is individually tailored to the specific patient through detailed CT scan modelling.

The material's super-elastic characteristics enable the springs to respond more naturally to the skull's growth patterns.

This innovation allows children to bypass more extensive surgical interventions whilst simultaneously reducing the likelihood of requiring blood transfusions during treatment.

Rory's parents, Harry and Jo Potter, raised concerns about their son's head appearing longer than anticipated shortly after his birth.

Following referral to Great Ormond Street Hospital, medical professionals confirmed the diagnosis and determined his severe case made him an ideal candidate for the experimental nitinol springs rather than conventional steel devices.

The medical team employed CT scanning technology to construct a precise digital model of Rory's skull, enabling them to predict his response to surgical intervention.

Bespoke springs were then manufactured to apply the optimal level of force required for his specific condition.

The procedure itself lasted just 45 minutes when performed in September of last year.

Remarkably, Rory required only a single overnight stay in hospital before returning home to the East Midlands, where his three-year-old brother Oscar and the family dog Ada awaited his return.

The springs remained in position for nine weeks, progressively reshaping his skull during this period.

Once medical teams determined his skull had achieved the target outcome, the devices were removed in a subsequent procedure.

Jo Potter, 36, described her son's current condition with evident relief, stating: "You wouldn't know what he's been through."

She characterised Rory as being "happy, cheeky and full of energy", adding: "He's just like every little boy and hitting milestones and he will have a great story to tell when he's older."

Mrs Potter expressed profound gratitude towards the medical professionals involved, saying: "We cannot thank the team enough for the care, compassion and reassurance. Not to mention their dedication to medical science to support and help children thrive."

She emphasised the quality of communication throughout the treatment process, stating: "Throughout the process, every element was explained so well. We knew what was going to happen and how, we received amazing support from each member of the team."

Professor Owase Jeelani, the consultant neurosurgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital who both helped develop the innovative springs and led Rory's surgical procedure, explained the technological advancement.

"Traditional stainless-steel springs are very robust, but they don't always allow us to finetune the force on the skull," he said. "These new nitinol springs give us much greater flexibility and, in some cases, can prevent the need for further surgery. This first surgery is important progress for children with craniosynostosis and, so far, we have seen fantastic outcomes."

Professor Silvia Schievano, who directed the biomedical engineering team at UCL, reflected on the lengthy development process.

"This has been many years in the making, with thousands of hours of necessary research undertaken," she said. "It is a very proud moment to see this technology used in a child with such a positive result. It uplifts the importance of engineering research and clinical care coming together to develop new technologies for improved healthcare."

The research underpinning the operation received financial backing from Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity and the National Institute for Health and Care Research GOSH Biomedical Research Centre.
