Another day, another crucial Cole Palmer goal.

Having been denied a goal in the first half following a lengthy VAR check on a narrow offside call when the game was still goalless, Palmer took less than two minutes of the second period to find what proved to be the game’s winner.

It wasn’t – you won’t be surprised to hear – his only telling contribution. He played a key role in the opening goal of the match, too, firing a sumptuous first-time ball in behind the Newcastle defence for Pedro Neto to run on to down the Chelsea left. Neto then squared for Nicolas Jackson to finish.

It was a landmark goal for Jackson, the strike taking him to 20 Premier League goals. Only four Chelsea players have reached 20 goals in the competition in fewer games than him (44). Jackson moves up to third for the club for non-penalty goals, with none of his coming from the penalty spot.

Alexander Isak scored an equaliser just after the half-hour mark, netting Newcastle’s first non-penalty goal in 436 minutes of action in all competitions, but the visitors weren’t level for long.

Palmer struck shortly after the break, and although Newcastle had a few opportunities in the second half, with Isak particularly dangerous, they ultimately couldn’t find a way back into the match. The result leaves Newcastle and their under-fire manager Eddie Howe languishing in the bottom half of the table.

Chelsea, meanwhile, for a few hours at least, moved into the top four.
