Chilean President José Antonio Kast will visit Bolivia on Friday 16 October 2026, the two foreign ministries announced. It would be a high-level step between neighbours that have had no ambassadors in each other’s capitals for decades.

What We Know

Chilean President José Antonio Kast will visit Bolivia on Friday 16 October 2026, according to a joint statement from the two foreign ministries on Thursday 8 October 2026. The statement calls the trip a clear signal of both governments’ interest in deepening dialogue and strengthening trust.

The ministries say cooperation will focus on prosperity, security and citizen welfare. The statement, carried by the EFE wire and reported by El Deber in Bolivia, does not name the city where Kast will be received.

Earlier, on 2 October 2026, Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz had confirmed a visit for Wednesday 14 October and Thursday 15 October. Paz, in office since November 2025, said the trip aims to strengthen commercial links around Oruro and Potosí, the entry and exit gateways for Bolivian trade.

A “puerto seco” (dry port), meaning an inland cargo terminal, was named as a possible investment point. The reports we saw do not explain why the dates moved to 16 October.

A Short History of Cold Relations

Chile and Bolivia have had no ambassadors in each other’s capitals for decades, and they keep consulates general instead. Sources differ on the exact year relations were cut, so we do not give one.

Bolivia filed a case at the International Court of Justice in 2013, seeking an obligation for Chile to negotiate sovereign access to the sea. In 2018 the court found that Chile had not undertaken a legal obligation to negotiate.

Several steps have followed in 2026. Paz attended Kast’s inauguration in March, the two foreign ministers met at the Chungará-Tambo Quemado border crossing in April, and they agreed that month to negotiate a modernised trade agreement, known as ACE-22.

The presidents met on 30 June 2026 at the Mercosur summit in Paraguay. The two ministries say the visit will also cover cooperation against drug trafficking and organised crime.

An earlier Kast visit had been postponed during unrest in Bolivia in May and June 2026. A dispute over Bolivian timber exports is also on the table.

In June a Chilean prosecutor alleged that over 100 tonnes of drugs were hidden in Bolivian timber. Bolivia says Chilean and Brazilian laboratory tests found none, and it has protested Chile’s destruction of cargoes in September.

More than 100 tonnes of narcotics were reported hidden in one timber shipment, and Chile destroyed shipments in September 2026. How that dispute will be settled is not yet clear.

What Is Not Known

The host city and the full programme have not been published. It is also unknown why the dates moved from 14 and 15 October to Friday 16 October.

No agreement has been announced, and the joint statement does not list sea access among the topics. Whether the trip could lead to restored ambassadors is equally unknown.

What It Means for Travelers and US Readers

Chile joined the US-led Shield of the Americas security and defence platform on 22 September 2026, as Kast attended a Shield meeting at the UN General Assembly in New York. Bolivia is listed among its founding members, according to La Tercera in Chile.

The platform was convened by US President Donald Trump on 7 March 2026, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth chairs its counter-cartel coalition. Security cooperation between the two neighbours is one of the stated topics of the visit.

Both countries sit on some of the world’s largest lithium reserves, in the Atacama in Chile and the Uyuni salt flat in Bolivia. Better trade links could matter to US investors who follow battery metals, and our report on Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Peru Sign a Minerals Pact covers the wider picture.

Our analysis is that the trip is unlikely to change entry rules at the border on its own. For background on the host, read Who Is Rodrigo Paz? Bolivia’s President and His US Bet.
