A Chinese traffic police brigade helped fulfil the dream of an eight-year-old boy with rare cancer, allowing him to experience a day as a traffic cop for his birthday, an act that warmed hearts online.
On March 10, the traffic police brigade of Jinan city in eastern China’s Shandong province made the wish of Daoming come true, a young boy who had been bravely battling rhabdomyosarcoma for four years.
Rhabdomyosarcoma is a type of soft tissue sarcoma that had affected both Daoming’s brain and nose, posing a potential risk to his vision.
His mother, Tan Yongfang, shared that he had undergone 18 chemotherapy sessions, 33 radiotherapies, and two surgeries, yet he remained strong-willed and considerate of her feelings throughout his challenging journey.
In February, Daoming’s cancer relapsed after months of remission. With only 10,000 yuan (US$1,400) in savings, Tan travelled from their home in southwestern China’s Chongqing to Jinan in search of better medical treatment for her son.
Before Daoming’s eighth birthday on March 9, Tan sent a message to the Jinan traffic police’s social media account, inquiring whether her son, who dreamed of becoming a traffic officer, could ride in one of their cars or direct traffic.
