NASHVILLE — Christa Pike was believed to be brain dead and doctors expected to take her off life support the night before she inexplicably woke up and started talking, her lawyer said.
Pike, 50, was rushed to hospital in a critical condition after two bungled attempts to execute her at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville on Sept. 30.

“On Monday night, it was our understanding that Christa was brain dead and that life support would be removed the next day,” Pike’s attorney, Randy Spivey, told a press conference Wednesday.
“But on Tuesday, to the shock of everyone, including me, including her team and including the medical team, Krista woke up and began talking,” he said.
“I do not have an explanation for what happened between Monday night and Tuesday morning.”
Pike was expected to be the first woman to be executed in Tennessee in over 200 years but instead became the first ever US inmate believed to have survived a lethal injection.
