ALBUQUERQUE, NM — CNN has officially been forced off the air in New Mexico after the state passed a new law criminalizing fake news.
With the passage of New Mexico House Bill 182, which threatens jail time for the publishing of erroneous "deceptive media," CNN was left with no choice but to pull the channel from New Mexico airwaves.
"We strongly disagree with New Mexico's law, which clearly violates our Constitutional right to publish fake news," said CNN CEO Mark Thompson. "While we have been forced to temporarily stop the distribution of CNN inside New Mexico, we are not giving up without a fight. The First Amendment guarantees CNN's ability to publish political parody, and allows for no exception. Rest assured, we will be taking this battle to the court system, and we will win."
The new law carries a possible punishment of 90 days in jail for the first publishing of fake news, with the second offense carrying up to five years in prison. "We'd all be in the slammer within the first hour," said CNN anchor Dana Bash. "We hate to deprive an entire state of CNN's hilarious political satire, but until the law is overturned, it's just not safe. We have to protect ourselves until this works itself out in the courts."
At publishing time, CNN had announced that it would be joining its old fake news rival The Babylon Bee in its lawsuit to overturn HB 182.
