Hong Kong authorities will initiate large-scale land disposal to develop new tourism and recreation areas for the first time in years, with three major sites identified, including one on Lamma Island that the government says could be turned into a marina for super yachts.
The Development Bureau invited expressions of interest on Wednesday for ecotourism development proposals for the quarry site, South Lantau Eco-Recreation Corridor and Pak Nai and Tsim Bei Tsui in the Northern Metropolis.
The government will use large-scale land disposal for the three sites. Under the recently introduced scheme, developers need to conduct site formation works and build public facilities for the government but they retain the private residential sites for profit.
The scheme calls for developers to propose plans for the project that include improved transport infrastructure for the areas.
“Hong Kong has long been without a new large tourist spot,” a bureau spokesman said.
The bureau said the three projects were positioned differently in the market. The quarry site was suitable for developing a high-end coastal and hillside resort, complemented by a world-class marina and low-rise luxury housing, it said.
