In a post on his X account on Tuesday, Esmaeil Baqaei marked the anniversary of the approval of an initiative proposed by Iran at the UN General Assembly in 2013, known as ‘World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE)’.

“Today is the day ‘A world free from violence and extremism’. 11 years ago Iran's proposed resolution on ‘A world against violence and violent extremism’ was adopted by consensus (A/68/127, 18 December 2013),” the spokesman said.

“That resolution is relevant today as it was then. Countering terrorism & violent extremism and addressing its threats to peace, security and human rights requires enhanced international cooperation,” he added.

In December 2013, the UN General Assembly unanimously approved a proposal presented by Iran for a World Against Violence and Extremism.

WAVE Act asks the United Nations member states to unite against extremism, violence and sectarian conflicts in all their forms.

The resolution encourages initiatives and moves by world leaders to discuss within their communities the roots and causes of extremism and discrimination, and propose strategies to effectively encounter them.

The resolution also recommends the promotion of community engagement in countering violent extremism, including by strengthening ties between communities and emphasizing the world nations’ common bonds and interests.
