Congress Kicks The Tin-Can Man Down The Road As AI Behemoth Reveals Chilling Warning Sign

AI behemoth Anthropic issued a chilling warning Thursday. Pretty much, they said, the robots are going rogue, and we all need to take a breather before things get way out of hand.

The company said in a blog post that AI technology will soon be able to design future models by itself, without human researchers and engineers. So, they say, we should tap the brakes.

“If it were possible to effectively slow the development of this technology to give ourselves more time to deal with its immense implications,” Anthropic believes, “that would likely be a good thing.” But the company said, “If a slowdown simply lets the least cautious actors catch up technologically, it could leave everyone less safe.” (RELATED: Anthropic Calls For Slowdown In Global AI Development)

“Without a global coordination mechanism, companies and governments will have to make difficult decisions about safety while under competitive and geopolitical pressures,” Anthropic said.

Coming from Anthropic, a company that has built one of the most powerful AI models in the world and has been blacklisted by the Pentagon over ethical issues, this is serious stuff.

But of course, our political leaders appear completely asleep at the wheel. Congress has yet to figure out a regulatory plan regarding AI, and in typical fashion, they are kicking the can down the road.

Politico reported Friday that Congress’s more “ambitious attempt at a grand compromise on artificial intelligence oversight” will likely flop in 2026. The draft bill on the table includes a bunch of provisions that have drawn bipartisan support, including provisions on workforce development and research.

However, some provisions would create blanket nationwide safety and transparency rules on Big Tech companies, according to Politico. These provisions would then block states from enforcing their own existing protections or creating new ones, Politico reported. Democrats oppose them, while Republicans are growing increasingly skeptical of striking a deal with the opposition. Major congressional action on AI probably won’t come until 2027 at the earliest.

AI regulation is almost an impossible nut to crack, and I certainly don’t have the answer. But it seems like the worst thing Congress can do right now is let their attempt at a bipartisan deal go dead in the water. With the pace at which AI is progressing, a lot can happen between now and 2027.

Anthropic’s warning shouldn’t be taken lightly. The Chinese Communist Party seems to understand the awesome powers of its technology. Unfortunately, Congress is doing what Congress does best: kicking the can down the road.
