A cricket club has been accused of cheating after footage appeared to show a fielder clicking his fingers to simulate the sound of a bat edge during a match.
The clip, captured during a second XI Division 2 encounter in the North Yorkshire and South Durham Cricket League, has now been viewed more than three million times on social media.
The league has launched a formal investigation into the Saltburn player's conduct, with accusations that the deception was intended to fool the umpire into giving the batsman out.
The incident occurred during Saltburn's match against Norton, when a video appeared to capture a Saltburn fielder snapping his fingers at the precise moment the ball travelled past batsman Noman Shabir's blade.
Wicketkeeper Josh Bowes then completed what appeared to be a catch, and the umpire upheld Saltburn's appeal, ruling Shabir out.
The suggestion is the clicking noise was deliberately made to convince the official that the ball had taken an edge.
In a statement posted on X, the league wrote: "The league have received a formal complaint regarding alleged incidents in a Division Two game on Saturday.

"A full investigation has been initiated, and until such time as the formal processes are complete, no further comment will be made."
Bowes' catching statistics have themselves attracted scrutiny.
He sits atop the league's catching charts with 31 dismissals – a tally that exceeds the next closest player by 10.

In Saltburn's 22-run victory over Shildon Railway the previous week, Bowes claimed eight catches in a single innings, surpassing the men's Test cricket record of seven for a wicketkeeper.
Further allegations have also surfaced from another fixture.
Rory Cotterill, captain of Middlesbrough's second XI, responded to the viral footage by claiming that Saltburn had engaged in two additional instances of cheating during his side's 29-run defeat to them the previous month.

Saltburn's comfortable 159-run triumph over Norton left them sitting 17 points clear at the summit of Division 2, making their on-field dominance a further point of discussion amid the controversy.
The story has resonated well beyond the north-east, with media organisations in both Australia and New Zealand picking up the footage from grassroots cricket.
