WHAT WE'RE WATCHING

🚨 Top Democrats demand Hegseth and Waltz resign. The leaked Signal chat involving top Trump officials has prompted congressional Democrats to call for the resignation of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. Newly released messages from the chat have sparked particular outrage, notably Defense Secretary Hegseth’s giving details on the timings of the bombings. Most of the Democrats demanding heads roll over this controversy did not urge any resignations following President Biden’s botched Afghanistan withdrawal.

🔎 Elon Musk tasked with investigating the Signal mishap. The White House has tapped Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency to uncover how journalist Jeffrey Goldberg was mistakenly included in a Signal chat with top security officials. Focused on addressing potential vulnerabilities, Musk's team aims to prevent future occurrences. This appointment of Musk demonstrates how the tech billionaire has become Trump's go-to problem solver for sensitive government operations.

⚖️ Appeals court blocks Trump's deportation of Venezuelans. A federal appeals court officially barred the Trump administration from deporting Venezuelan nationals under the Alien Enemies Act, emphasizing constitutional questions over due process. Attorney General Pam Bondi slammed the lower court judges and vowed to appeal to the Supreme Court. This ruling will set up a major legal battle over defining the executive’s purview and whether illegal aliens are subject to due process rights.

🚗 Trump declared new tariffs on all foreign cars. Yesterday, President Trump announced new 25 percent tariffs on all imported autos to take effect on April 2, the same day as his reciprocal tariffs. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen quickly criticized the tariffs, saying that they are “bad for businesses, worse for consumers equally in the US and the European Union.” The aggressive move appears designed to force Europe into negotiations over their own protectionist policies.

THE MAIN STORY

WHAT’S HAPPENING_

For the second day in a row, hundreds of Palestinians in northern Gaza are taking to the streets to protest Hamas, chanting slogans like “Out, out — Hamas should get out!” The protests signal a significant shift in public sentiment in Gaza, where Hamas has ruled since 2007. Local residents are reportedly upset over new evacuation orders and the terror group’s refusal to lay down its arms, though much of their anger is directed at Hamas-friendly media who refused to cover the demonstrations.

These protests mark the largest public opposition to Hamas in Gaza since the group launched its October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.

_THE FACTS_

  • Video footage shows large protests in northern Gaza, with crowds chanting: “Hamas is a terrorist.”

  • "Gazans are expressing anger at Al Jazeera and global media generally for covering only Hamas, ignoring the voices of Gazan civilians,” said Joseph Braude, president of the Center for Peace Communications.

  • One Palestinian man claimed that Al Jazeera reporter — and reportedly a Hamas member — Anas Al-Sharif entered a nearby Indonesian hospital, refusing to cover the protests.

  • Some demonstrators shouted, “Down with Hamas rule, down with the Muslim Brotherhood rule.”

  • Another Palestinian said, “We refuse to die for anyone, for any party’s agenda or the interests of foreign states… Hamas must step down.”

  • Armed and masked Hamas militants, carrying rifles and batons, intervened to break up the protests and assaulted several participants.

  • Hamas responded to the demonstrations by accusing protesters of pushing “suspicious political agendas” and attempting to shift blame from Israel.

  • The protests came one day after Islamic Jihad fired rockets at Israel, prompting Israeli-issued evacuations of Beit Lahia, a city in Gaza’s north, and a resumption of airstrikes.
