DC’s Sanctuary City Status at Risk With New Bill

A bill aiming to remove D.C.’s sanctuary laws passed the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Wednesday.

The District of Columbia Federal Immigration Compliance Act, also known as H.R. 2056, was introduced by Republican Rep. Clay Higgins from Louisiana.

Higgins claims that for years DC Council enacted laws that prohibit employees from working with federal immigration agencies, such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

On his website, Higgins pointed to the Sanctuary Values Amendment Act, which was enacted in 2020, and controls how the District cooperates with federal immigration agencies, specifically questioning of status and release to ICE custody.
