A Deltarune fan cafe promised themed food, merch, and activities for fans of Toby Fox’s RPG. Instead, it ended with an apology after tons of attendees got food poisoning.
Deltarune is the episodic follow-up to Fox’s hugely successful Undertale, following Kris, Susie, and Ralsei across a series of mysterious Dark Worlds. Its characters, soundtrack, and offbeat humor have helped it build a huge online following since its first chapter arrived in 2018.
As such, one Toronto-based fan event organizer, Sugar Packet, hoped to bring that world to life with a themed cafe on August 9, including Deltarune-inspired food, local artists, cosplay servers, merch, photo opportunities, and interactive activities.
However, the event did not go to plan, with attendees reporting overcrowding, long delays, and poor organization, while multiple fans later claimed they suffered food poisoning after eating at the cafe.
Sugar Packet apologizes after Deltarune Cafe “failure”
In a statement shared on Instagram, Sugar Packet admitted that “the Deltarune Cafe was a failure.” The organizers listed several problems, including unexpected increases in food prices, overcrowding, “poor crowd control,” and the “last-minute pushing back of the reservations.”
However, their biggest problem was after the event, when Sugar Packet received reports that attendees had become ill, with the takoyaki identified as a particular concern: “We have received multiple reports of foodborne illnesses after the event. In particular from the Takoyaki,” revealed the company in a statement.
According to the organizers, the frozen takoyaki was left to thaw inside an ice box rather than a refrigerator before being prepared and served.
“The Takoyaki was stored in an ice box to thaw and then served afterwards,” the statement continued. “They had only left the freezer that morning for the first batch, and that afternoon for the second. Bags were removed from the cooler only when they were being made and swapped between shifts.”
“Our research said that thawing them in a fridge and serving within 24 hours afterwards was safe, but we apologize. That is not the standard you are all looking for,” it added.
Following the event, Sugar Packet offered refunds to everyone who purchased a ticket, regardless of whether they reported becoming ill, vowing to hold off on any future events for the time being.
