Dem hopeful’s wild Hawaii beach saga takes darker turn as alleged assault history emerges

A Democrat congressional candidate who was knocked out and arrested in Hawaii last week has at least three active criminal cases against him, The California Post can reveal.

Kirill Basin allegedly attacked a registered nurse and another man on the same day, as well as a separate incident where he is accused of harassing a psychiatrist, court records show.

Basin was caught on video being flattened by Kama Homan on the sand in Maui after blasting music and allegedly threatening to shoot a 61-year-old man’s wife when he complained.

Footage showed the budding politician being dropped before Homan quickly tried to rouse him, then continued to berate him when he woke up.

Court records show the 40-year-old was under investigation for allegedly assaulting registered nurse Fred Saranillio at Maui Memorial Medical Center on June 10. That same day he is also said to have harassed another man named Messiah Manalili, though it is unclear where and when exactly this took place.

A day earlier he is also claimed to have harassed Dr. James McKinnon, a registered psychiatrist on the island.

Basin pleaded not guilty to the felony assault count and two misdemeanor counts of harassment. The case was initially dismissed without prejudice before prosecutors brought the charges again on June 15.

A bench warrant had been issued in the case Wednesday, but Basin is still in jail as of Thursday. He’s also been named as a respondent in seven temporary restraining order cases, court records revealed. The cases were all filed from May 29 to June 3.

Basin gained infamy last week when The Post published footage of him being knocked out by Homan in Maui.

He had been allegedly provoking beachgoers, blasting music and threatening people. Homan claimed he had been threatened with a knife.

Cops arrested Basin for two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening stemming from the fight, and he remained in jail on $1 million bail.

The viral arrest has likely tanked his already unlikely election challenge against Rep. Jill Tokuda of Hawaii’s second congressional district. Basin’s political beliefs had been underlined with his mission of: “Fighting. With Aloha,” according to his campaign website.

He said he believed people should “act with love” and avoid the “hate and grievance” which “motivate the political ecosystem of bad decisions and indecision.”

“Replicating that will not produce the cooperation we need for things to happen. We must act with love. Urgently,” he wrote.

He claims he is a graduate of New York University and “ran operations as COO of a 3,000-employee healthcare company.”

If in office, Basin said he wants to bring in an “AI-powered platform that cuts permit review times from months and years to days,” as well as a Mamdani-esque municipal cooperative grocery. He also said he would advocate for Native Hawaiians.

In a mission statement posted to his LinkedIn page, Basin also called for a “private media ecosystem,” and made a strange idiom involving a baby and bathwater. “THINGS MUST CHANGE BUT WE DO NOT THROW THE BABY OUT WITH THE BATHWATER,” he wrote.

He said Americans must have leaders “with the focus, energy, intellect and humility to bring people together to begin to solve the problems.” “We have a window. We must act before it closes,” he added.

Basin is on the ballot for the Hawaii Democratic Primary for the state’s second congressional district on Aug. 8.

Basin has halted his social media activity since he’s been in police custody. His last post decried Maui County’s “kangaroo court” for charging him with showing Maui County employees a gun in a separate incident last month.

“See you on the next edition of ‘How Shameless Can They Get and Still Sleep at Night?'” he wrote. He also alleged police tortured him for “15 straight hours.”

Basin’s next scheduled court appearance in his terroristic threatening case is set for next Thursday.
