Incidents of Democratic friendly fire appear to be increasing dramatically ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, while capturing the dour mood of countless Americans who believe politicians are self-serving, mendacious, and totally uninterested in addressing bread-and-butter issues.
Axios reviewed hundreds of political ads run in House, Senate, or statewide races during election cycles between 2018 and 2026. Although for years the number of Democratic ads mentioning the Democratic Party or its “party leaders” far outpaced negative ads, 2024 saw a drastic reversal. The number of Democratic ads that attacked the party or both parties as corrupt and ineffective surged, while the number of positive ads plummeted.
