The Democratic-aligned Senate Majority PAC (SMP) is spending $1.2 million on advertisements through Nov. 3 to boost Democrat Scott Colom in the Mississippi U.S. Senate race.

The investment shows Democrats think they can win in Mississippi, a state no Democratic presidential candidate has carried since Jimmy Carter won it in 1976.

Colom will face Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith in the Nov. 3 general election.

“SMP is going up on TV in Mississippi. $1.2 million behind Scott Colom, starting tomorrow and running through Election Day,” SMP spokeswoman Lauren French said Tuesday in a post on X. “This is the first time SMP has spent in this race. It won’t be the last thing you hear about it.”

French said Colom is running a competitive race, and Cindy Hyde-Smith is “on her heels.”

Hyde-Smith responded to the investment by the Democratic PAC.

“Scott Colom and his out-of-state billionaire donors want to open our borders, raise your taxes, and move our nation closer to socialism,” Hyde-Smith said in a post on X on Tuesday. “Make your voting plan now!”

The Hyde-Smith campaign pointed out how long it took for the Democrats to spend money supporting Colom’s campaign.

“It took Chuck Schumer and his Super PACs 13 months to run a single ad for Scott Colom,” Nathan Calvert, communications director for the Hyde-Smith campaign, said in an email to The Epoch Times. “Chuck knows what Mississippians know, Scott Colom is too liberal, he supports transgender surgeries for children, men in women’s restrooms and locker rooms, open borders, and higher taxes. Team Cindy is confident that voters will reject this radical agenda at the ballot box on Nov. 3.”

The Democrats have talked about spending money in Mississippi and believed early in 2025 that they could compete in the state, French said on X.

“None of this came out of nowhere. Democrats have talked about Mississippi all cycle,” French said. “Most notably Leader Schumer, who has made the case since the early days of 2025 that Democrats can and should compete in Mississippi.”

The Colom campaign didn’t respond to an email seeking comment.

President Donald Trump gave Hyde-Smith his endorsement in March 2025.

“Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith is 100% MAGA, and doing a fantastic job representing the Incredible People of Mississippi!” Trump said in a 2025 post on Truth Social. “An Original Member of my Mississippi Leadership Team, Cindy has been with us from the very beginning. In the Senate, Cindy is fighting hard to Secure our Border, Grow the Economy, Champion our Amazing Farmers and American Agriculture, Support our Brave Military/Veterans, Promote Energy DOMINANCE, and Defend our always under siege Second Amendment.”

Colom’s endorsements include several unions, mayors in Mississippi, and U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.)

The Republicans hold a majority in the U.S. Senate. There are 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats, and two independents, Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Angus King of Maine, who both caucus with the Democrats.

Trump has campaigned in multiple states in October to garner support for Republicans in the midterm elections.
