A Minnesota man who murdered his female coworker in a jealous rage after being rejected by her has been sentenced to life in prison.

Michael Carpenter, 38, was seen smiling as he entered the court room on September 20  - even smirking before he was sentenced for the murder of 28-year-old Nicole Hammond.

But justice was served when Carpenter was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

In footage captured by Fox 9, Carpenter spoke after the victim impact statements by Hammond's family and said she was an 'amazing person and really nice' - but neglected to give the family an apology.

The trial had only lasted two weeks before Carpenter was found guilty of first degree premeditated murder and second degree intentional murder on August 5.

Nicole's mother Terri Lou told Fox 9: 'It was kind of a case like if I can't have you nobody can and that's just crazy.'

Carpenter shot Nicole once in the neck on October 24, 2022 in the parking lot of Dubow Textile where the pair worked at in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

That night before, the two exchanged a series of texts messages where Nicole told Carpenter that she 'requested not to be touched,' said a statement from Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison's office

The next morning, Carpenter brought a 9mm pistol and approached Nicole as she got out of her vehicle to enter the workplace.

Carpenter fired the shot and then fled the scene - leaving Nicole to bleed out.

Ellison released a statement the day of Carpenter's sentencing that said: 'My thoughts are with Nicole Hammond's friends, family, and community today. Nicole was a talented, kind, and caring soul who loved art and nature. She will be missed by many.'

Terri Lou expressed her happiness about Carpenter's life in prison verdict on Facebook, writing that she was happy to send him on his merry way and that she doesn't think he'll be smiling anymore.

This verdict was four days before Tre C. James received his sentencing for murdering his girlfriend Jamie Yazzie five years ago

After family members of slain Yazzie described their grief in a federal courtroom, the judge on Monday sentenced her boyfriend to life imprisonment for first-degree murder in a case that became emblematic of what officials call an epidemic of missing and slain Indigenous women.

Her relatives and friends cheered as they streamed out of the downtown Phoenix courthouse after U.S. District Court Judge Douglas L. Rayas handed down the sentence for James.
