Discord users are furious over a court-backed Take-Two subpoena seeking extensive account information from members of several servers as the publisher hunts for the person behind the GTA 6 leaks.
Take-Two filed its initial requests against Discord and Microsoft on August 20 after unreleased GTA 6 gameplay began appearing online under the Cyberleek name.
The Discord request covers three communities, including a server associated with GTA creator DarkViperAU that reportedly has more than 100,000 members. It seeks information for users who were members of the named servers from June 1 onward, not only the accounts directly accused of sharing leaks.
Requested records include original message logs, IP access logs, email addresses, phone numbers, registration timestamps, linked accounts and device identifiers.
Discord users blast Take-Two’s sweeping GTA 6 request
The subpoena began receiving renewed attention after a post on the Discord subreddit claimed Judge Andrew L. Carter Jr. had approved Take-Two’s request to “dox 100,000 Discord users.”
“Nothing is private,” one user responded.
Another argued that pursuing the leaker was not the issue, writing: “The point is not that finding the leaker is unreasonable, it’s the method.”
“Compromising thousands of users just to find 1 person seems like a poor choice honestly,” a third added. Others urged Discord to challenge the demand, with one simply writing: “Hope Discord appeals.”
The initial subpoena was approved in August, with Take-Two later stating that it was issued on August 21 and “promptly served on Discord.” However, Discord marketing director Ryan K. Rigney said several days later that the company had not received it.
“When we do, we’ll evaluate the validity and scope before responding,” Rigney said at the time.
It remains unclear whether Discord has since provided any information. The original subpoena set a September 4 deadline, but no transfer of user data has been publicly confirmed.
The renewed backlash arrived shortly after Carter approved a separate and more targeted Discord subpoena. The second request concerns one additional Discord user, further identifying information about a previously named user and details connected to the communities listed in the first subpoena.
Most of that filing is being kept under seal to prevent the suspected leakers from learning what Take-Two has uncovered. It is separate from the broader request involving members of the 100,000-user server.
Take-Two previously described its investigation as “rapidly evolving” as it identified additional Discord accounts potentially connected to Cyberleek.
