US President Donald Trump has announced new fuel economy standards that will eliminate a Joe Biden-era electric vehicle mandate.
Taking to social media over the weekend, President Donald Trump announced a "big day for American auto workers and car buyers".
President Trump confirmed that he had approved new fuel economy standards to eliminate the years-old electric vehicle mandate.
In his Truth Social post, he took aim at "sleepy" Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg, whom the President called "Pete Boot-EDGE-EDGE", for the "ridiculous" EV mandate.
The new fuel economy standards are expected to be published later today, with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy previously stating that they would be lower than Biden-era policies.
President Trump wrote: "The Dumocrats cost our Great Auto Manufacturers $Billions, forced Americans into cars they never wanted, and wasted Billions on Chargers that were never built."
He added that the new standards would allow drivers to pay thousands of dollars less for a "new, beautiful and safe car".
The 47th US President claimed that this would allow drivers to avoid "environmental monsters that we were building heretofore".

The Truth Social post claimed that "every manufacturer", including General Motors, Ford and Stellantis, had requested measures to make car production more viable in the United States.
Since President Trump returned to office last year, he claims that more than $100billion (£75billion) has been invested in the American automotive sector.
He noted that investment and jobs were coming back to historic manufacturing locations, including Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and South Carolina.
President Trump specifically thanked Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, calling them "great".

Under President Joe Biden, fuel efficiency standards were raised in a bid to incentivise the production of electric vehicles.
Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg warned that lowering fuel economy standards would play into the hands of Chinese manufacturers.
He suggested that drivers would also need to pay more at the pump under the new directive from President Trump.
The move to scrap the EV mandate was included in the President's "Unleashing American Energy" executive order passed on his first day in office.

It stated that scrapping the electric vehicle measures would give consumers more car choices, further boosting economic growth.
The executive order pledged to remove "unfair subsidies and other ill-conceived government-imposed market distortions that favour EVs over other technologies and effectively mandate their purchase by individuals, private businesses, and government entities".
