Donald Trump’s Greenland deal has been branded a “dangerous step” by Tobias Ellwood, who warned that the US leader was “splintering” the global order.
The former Defence Select Committee chairman was reacting on GB News after it was announced that Washington had reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland to gain “permanent control” over the island’s security.
Nevertheless, Mr Ellwood warned the agreement represented a significant shift from the existing arrangements governing the US military presence in Greenland.
“This is another step, a dangerous step in America consolidating its sphere of influence as we see confirmation that our global order is progressively being abandoned,” he said.
“Hang on,” GB News presenter Charlie Peters jumped in.
“How is it dangerous for the United States and allies to have a greater and stronger presence in Greenland, which has a key strategic position?”

“I'm just struggling to see why it's dangerous for our ally to have a greater position securing Nato security.”
“Because it's not under the Nato umbrella that this is being done,” Mr Ellwood shot back.
“If Russia is the threat, why isn't America helping us stand up to Russia and Ukraine? They're not spending a penny there anymore. They’ve backed out completely,” he said.
“This is a geopolitical, geostrategic game, played by Donald Trump to secure land for the minerals and also, as I say, for consolidation of a sphere of influence.

“So America and Europe are not on the same page,” the former Defence Select Committee chairman said.
Mr Ellwood rejected suggestions that he was adopting a “cynical” view of Mr Trump’s deal over Greenland.
“I'm afraid he is actually disengaging with Nato, disengaging with Europe, and is looking at Greenland as part of that sphere of influence.
“We will see America eventually, particularly if Donald Trump has his way of actually leaving Nato. Certainly having no commitment (to the alliance).

“I see how Donald Trump operates. I see his commitment to the international community, to Europe.
“I'm deeply concerned that there is another agenda quietly at play here,” Mr Ellwood said.
President Trump said that his Greenland deal would come at “no cost to the United States” and gave the US free rein to “secure and defend the security of Greenland”.
Writing on Truth Social, Mr Trump said no US adversary would be permitted to have a military presence on the island and would allow Washington to “make sensitive investments in Greenland, without our express written approval”.
