Hey y’all, welcome back to Unfit to Print.

DON’T BE MEAN TO CLANKERS

Our tech overlords have moved on from the systematic destruction of humanity to a new crisis: people being mean to their chatbots.

Anthropic, the company behind Claude, has updated its usage policy to prohibit “sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior” toward its AI models.

The new policy apparently only applies to people who repeatedly abuse their models for no discernible reason. Normal frustration with your chatbot is still allowed. For now, at least.

The move to protect the chatbots’ feelings comes at a time when Anthropic is openly debating whether or not its AI models are sentient. A recent report revealed that one of the company’s founders privately pressed Pope Leo to soften his encyclical stating that AI is not conscious.

“[W]e don’t know if A.I. models are conscious. I don’t know. I’m genuinely uncertain,” Chris Olah told the New York Times. “The thing that I care about is that we get to the right answer, whatever it is.”

So the company actively warning that AI could pose an existential threat to humanity without appropriate regulation has already moved on to providing safe spaces for its models.

Very reassuring.

And while Anthropic holds prayer circles to determine if they’ve actually created some kind of higher power, one of the tech industry’s most influential figures is flogging humans who express concerns about where this all is headed.
