Princess Diana's brother Earl Spencer allegedly kept a "long-term mistress" before ending his marriage by text message, according to High Court papers.
The allegations form part of Countess Karen Spencer's defence to a privacy case brought against her by Dr Cat Jarman, an archaeologist who had been working at the earl's Althorp estate.
Earl Spencer has strongly denied the claims, calling them "an absurd attempt to blacken my name".
He insists his wife Karen ended the marriage "after endless threats to do so over the years" and that he merely confirmed it by text in March.

Countess Spencer claims her husband had been having an affair with Dr Jarman since at least late 2022, "and more likely since 2021", while the archaeologist was conducting excavations at Althorp.
In an email to Dr Jarman revealed in court papers seen by the Daily Mail, the countess wrote: "First of all as a woman, I just have to tell you that I am so disappointed in you. Turning all of the children's lives upside down like this is so unbelievably immoral."
The countess also told Dr Jarman she would not be welcome at Althorp, saying it would be "too much to ask" of staff to serve "Charles' long-term mistress".
The allegations emerged after comparing notes with Dr Jarman's husband, Tom Jarman.
Dr Jarman, 42, is suing Countess Spencer, 52, for revealing private details about her Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis.
"I have worked very hard indeed to keep my MS hidden," Dr Jarman told the Mail. "Only a handful of people have known and Charles wasn't one of them."
Dr Jarman claims the countess disclosed her condition to Earl Spencer after learning about it from someone close to her.
She called it a "hideous and defamatory attack" and said the stress of the situation "seriously impacts my health".
Countess Spencer maintains her disclosures were "entirely justified and legitimate" given the circumstances of her marriage breakdown.

The Canadian-born social entrepreneur became Spencer's third wife in 2011, and they have an 11-year-old daughter, Lady Charlotte Diana.
The couple announced their split in June, with Earl Spencer publicly confirming his relationship with Dr Jarman in October.
The legal action is at an early stage and has not yet come to trial.
Countess Spencer has repeatedly refused to comment on the breakdown of her marriage and the ensuing legal action.
Friends say she wants to fight the case in court through publicly available documents and evidence.
