Ethereum Foundation funds WEBCAT to close front-end security gaps for wallets and dapps, targeting risks like supply-chain attacks.
The Ethereum Foundation has announced a significant grant under its Trillion Dollar Security (1TS) initiative to the Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) for the continued development of WEBCAT. This open-source tool addresses critical gaps in front-end verification for Ethereum wallets and decentralized applications (dapps).
Front-end security has emerged as a pressing concern for the Ethereum ecosystem. While HTTPS encrypts connections, it doesn't verify if the code served by a website matches the original code published by developers. This leaves users vulnerable to supply-chain attacks where compromised front-end code could manipulate transactions or steal private keys. WEBCAT, short for Web-based Code Assurance and Transparency, aims to mitigate this risk by allowing browsers to verify that the code loaded from a site matches a signed, auditable manifest.

The grant is particularly relevant for Ethereum users, as many interact with audited smart contracts through mutable web-based front ends.
