The European Union is urging all citizens across its 27 member states to prepare three-day survival kits amid growing concerns about potential conflict.

The initiative, part of a broader "preparedness strategy", will be formally presented today by EU crisis management commissioner Hadja Lahbib.

Brussels wants to ensure every citizen is equipped for 72 hours of self-sufficiency as fears mount over the threat of continental conflict.

The move comes as European leaders have warned that Russia's invasion of Ukraine could potentially escalate into a "global" war.

"All of this comes in addition to national strategies," she added.

The commissioner highlighted how preparation can prevent panic, recalling how shelves were emptied of toilet paper during the early days of the pandemic.

Some EU lawmakers have urged the commission to go further by sending preparedness handbooks to every household in the bloc.

Several European nations have already implemented similar preparedness measures.

France is preparing to issue a survival manual to all households with instructions for creating a kit including six litres of water, canned food, batteries and medical supplies.

Norwegian officials are conducting mass evacuation drills in northern towns, with citizens already provided with survival guides.

Sweden has distributed pamphlets titled "If Crisis or War Comes" to its population.

Finland has warned citizens to prepare "for incidents and crises", whilst Denmark has advised people about necessary supplies for three days of crisis.

EU leaders have expressed concern that Vladimir Putin could advance further into Europe if Russia's invasion of Ukraine succeeds.

"The Russians have globalised the war in Ukraine," French President Emmanuel Macron said last month.

He added: "There's a conflict in Ukraine, in which Russians, as a matter of fact, have made things global."

When questioned about whether the conflict might spread beyond Ukraine, Macron responded: "Will [the war] be limited to this theatre? Let's hope so."
