An NHS worker is celebrating after winning £1m in the EuroMillions lottery following a "funny feeling" that prompted him to buy tickets on New Year's Eve.

Andy Hornsby, 56, who has worked for the NHS for more than a decade, purchased two Lucky Dip tickets at his local Asda on Pheasant Fields Lane after experiencing a strong gut instinct about the December 31 draw.

"Normally I wouldn't spend £5 on tickets but I just followed some gut instinct," said Hornsby, who placed the tickets under a lucky shamrock stone on his mantlepiece upon returning home.

The medical delivery driver from Redcar, who rarely plays EuroMillions, made the life-changing purchase for just £2.50, leading to a New Year's celebration he would never forget.

Hornsby discovered his win just ten minutes before midnight, while preparing drinks for the New Year's countdown.

"I thought the EuroMillions Millionaire Maker code matched but, as I didn't have my glasses on, I couldn't be sure so handed the ticket to my stepdaughter to check," he said.

His stepdaughter confirmed the win using the National Lottery app, leading to immediate laughter between the pair.

"My partner thought she'd missed midnight when she walked into the lounge to hear us all cheering, but instead of saying 'Happy New Year', I said, 'I think we're millionaires' to which she replied, 'Don't be so stupid'," Hornsby recalled.

The evening became a blur of repeatedly checking the ticket, with his partner's main concern being that he might "spend it all in B&M!"

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Hornsby and his fiancée Mandy, who have been together for six years, have already begun putting their windfall to good use.

The couple, who got engaged last year, have had an offer accepted on their dream forever home - a bungalow in their favourite North Yorkshire town.

Hornsby has also treated himself to a VW campervan to explore more of the UK with their dog, Bella.

"We're getting married in May, it will be amazing to start our married life mortgage-free, in our forever home and in our dream location," said Hornsby.

"I can't wait to pack up the camper on a Friday night, with our beloved dog, Bella, on board, and hit the open road for the weekend."

Despite his newfound wealth, Hornsby plans to continue his role as a specialist medical delivery driver in the community.

"I enjoy what I do, I've worked all my life so see no need to stop at present," he explained.

His fiancée Mandy, however, has already handed in her notice from her shift work position.

The change will allow the couple more flexibility for weekend getaways and extended holidays in their new campervan.

The win was confirmed on New Year's Day when Hornsby contacted the National Lottery Line.

He immediately shared the news with his colleagues, sending them a screengrab of the win with the message "Happy New Year, I've won The National Lottery."

"Going in for my shift the next day there were plenty of congratulations and a fair bit of banter too, that helped it to feel real," he said.
