Ex-CoD dev reveals new “anti-Call of Duty” FPS that mocks shooter games

A solo developer is making a unique first-person shooter that’s been described as the “anti-Call of Duty,” as it analyzes our relationship with war games.

Non-Euclidean, who previously worked on the CoD series, is the dev behind War Fantasy, an FPS that has been in development for 9 years.

But don’t expect the usual gunfights and explosive set pieces, though, as it’s less Battlefield and more of a “psychological horror” about the “merging of war video games and real war.” According to the official Steam page, it takes the best of Spec Ops: The Line and The Stanley Parable, and sprinkles in a little Black Mirror for good measure.

You play as a soldier dropped into an endless military compound full of looping corridors and surreal rooms, as a ruthless commander teaches you to become a killing machine. As you progress through the facility, all of your choices and behaviour will have a direct impact on how the story plays out.

Along the way, you must “confront the real-world history the game doesn’t want you to know.” From the trailer, it appears that it may all be taking place inside a fictional video game titled “War Fantasy.”

“An unflinching examination of gaming’s ever-present relationship with violence and the machinery of warfare,” reads the description. “This game will not pull punches or ignore the tragic cost of conflict. Player actions have consequences.”

Although War Fantasy doesn’t currently have a release date, it’s already racked up 30,000 wishlists on Steam since it was announced in May and is generating plenty of buzz. ‘Indie Game Joe‘ shared footage on X and labelled it the “anti-Call of Duty,” in a post that earned over 4.5 million views.
