Fact Check: Fake CNN headline says all Democrats need latest COVID shot to vote

CNN did not report that U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris requires Democrats to take an updated COVID-19 vaccine to vote in the 2024 presidential election, as suggested by a fake screenshot shared on social media.

The image is made to resemble a report on the CNN website with the headline: “BREAKING: Kamala to require all democrats to take the updated covid shot in order to vote in November.”

It was posted on Facebook, opens new tab captioned, “End this madness, vote Republican!” and garnered comments such as, “I wonder why they don't force the 24 million illegals to take it?”

However, Emily Kuhn, a spokesperson for CNN, said in an email that the image is fabricated and “not something CNN reported.”

There is also no evidence of such an article on CNN's website, opens new tab nor any announcement, opens new tab from the Democratic Party referring to mandatory vaccination.

The fake screenshot emerged online just days after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Aug. 22 approved updated COVID-19 vaccines targeting recent variants of the virus ahead of a vaccination campaign in the fall of 2024.
