An Israeli airstrike killed five Syrian soldiers in an attack on a military site on the Syrian-Lebanese border Damascus, state media said.

It comes after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) struck the end of a small border crossing between Syria and Lebanon on Thursday, claiming it had targeted infrastructure used to transport weapons to Hezbollah.

Israel and Hezbollah continued intense fighting on Thursday, with dozens killed in Israeli air strikes in Lebanon, according to the country’s health authorities. Iran-backed Hezbollah also fired dozens of rockets at northern Israel after a 19-hour lull.

The attacks continued despite growing international calls for a ceasefire, which several Israeli ministers have outright rejected.

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, said he had instructed the IDF to “continue fighting at full force” before releasing a statement late on Thursday saying Israel “shared the aims” of Washington’s 21-day ceasefire proposal.
