About 500 IT jobs are cut at utility through layoffs and voluntary departures
Information technology workers at Southern California Edison (SCE) are being laid off and replaced by workers from India. Some employees are training their H-1B visa holding replacements, and many have already lost their jobs.
The employees are upset and say they can’t understand how H-1B guest workers can be used to replace them.
The IT organization’s “transition effort” is expected to result in about 400 layoffs, with “another 100 or so employees leaving voluntarily,” SCE said in a statement. The “transition,” which began in August, will be completed by the end of March, the company said.
“They are bringing in people with a couple of years’ experience to replace us and then we have to train them,” said one longtime IT worker. “It’s demoralizing and in a way I kind of felt betrayed by the company.”
SCE, Southern California’s largest utility, has confirmed the layoffs and the hiring of Infosys, based in Bangalore, and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in Mumbai. They are two of the largest users of H-1B visas.
The utility has a large IT department. In 2012, before any layoffs, it had about 1,800 employees, plus an additional 1,500 contract workers.
Computerworld interviewed, separately, four affected SCE IT employees. They agreed to talk on the condition that their names not be used.
The IT employees at SCE are “beyond furious,” said a second IT worker.
The H-1B program “was supposed to be for projects and jobs that American workers could not fill,” this worker said. “But we’re doing our job. It’s not like they are bringing in these guys for new positions that nobody can fill.

From 2015.
This is what these Indian tech migrant H-1Bs are really about. What do you say to this, Vivek and Elon?

Just a question:
If Americans aren’t qualified for these jobs how can they be qualified to train their replacements?

After watching this happen to 10s and 10s and 10s of millions of blue collar workers for 60 years you would think they would quietly accept this happening to a couple of a hundred thousand of themselves, the way most of them probably accepted the wipe out of the American blue collar class.
Unless I am mistaken on how most California IT workers have been voting all of their lives.

I am surprised how those low-IQ H1-B workers can keep the place running with all the good quality American IT people gone? I would expect bankruptcy for the corporation.

No questions allowed, just move along. The Elon and Vivek simps will accuse you of racist attacks and concern trolling and there are to be no questions as far as they are “concerned.”

20 years ago, I worked on a project for a consulting company where the workers of a manufacturing company (in Maine) were forced train their Chinese replacements, several dozen of whom came to the plant for two months, as the factory was being moved to China.
It really affected me. These rural/suburban Maine (white) folks knew their jobs would be gone, and as a blackmail condition of a severance package, were forced to stay on the job during this period.
I was half-expecting a mass shooting of the company owners/management by some angry employees, given the absurdity of the situation. I secretly believed that some level of violence or anger on the part of the humiliated workers would have been justified.
nonetheless, these amiable New England rural men and women treated the Chinese guests kindly and with respect, and held nothing back - and they gave up their jobs and livelihoods without a peep.
I found the whole thing very distasteful and left that company shortly thereafter.
I see no absolutely NO difference with H1B, except the off-shore job theft is now coming here.

Trump better get this solved the right way with increasing tech and engineering college education right here in the USA.

When we're laying off perfectly good American workers to replace them with H1-B Indian contractors, how is "increasing tech and engineering college education" in the US going to help?
This is about replacing American workers with cheaper foreigners, and has been for years. The idea that there are no Americans available to do these jobs is laughable.

It will not be long until H-1B programmers from India are replaced by AI programming. Ancient systems will still need humans to make and apply changes.

This reminds me of the covid shots and Trump saying how great they were, wrong. Thump ,Musk , Vivek are wrong. Teach Americans to do these jobs stop all immigration for 20 years.
It’s funny how the democrats think we are mind numb robots. We disagree with Trump on this and his shots.
