Former Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor’s publicly funded office will be relocated from a prime commercial building to government premises in Wan Chai, the Post has learned.
Sources on Saturday told the Post that Immigration Tower in Wan Chai, the former headquarters of the Immigration Department, would house Lam’s new workplace.
The relocation follows months of scrutiny after her current office at One Pacific Place in Admiralty was revealed to cost taxpayers an estimated HK$9.17 million (US$1.17 million) in the 2023-24 financial year, including a hefty rent of HK$5.67 million.
The department last June relocated its headquarters from Wan Chai to Tseung Kwan O, years after Lam in 2017 announced the plan to demolish Immigration Tower and two nearby government buildings and redevelop them into convention, hotel and commercial facilities.
Lam will take the office previously used by the director of immigration, according to sources.
As suggested by an independent commission and approved by the legislature in 2005, the government provides office accommodation and administrative support for all former chief executives to support their promotional activities for Hong Kong.
