State Rep. Anna Eskamani, a former Planned Parenthood staffer and abortion activist-turned politician, has announced that she will be running for mayor of Orlando, Florida.
Eskamani previously worked as the Senior Director of Public Affairs and Communications for Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida, and was a keynote speaker at the 2017 Women’s March in Orlando, where she boasted of her work with Planned Parenthood and her support for abortion.
Eskamani has served in the Florida House of Representatives since 2018, and can no longer seek re-election after winning a fourth and final term last month.
She said she was encouraged to run for a statewide office, but wanted to focus on her hometown of Orlando instead.
“In 2027, Orlando faces a pivotal moment,” she told Orlando Weekly. “And with so much uncertainty at the national level, we need a people-centered leader with the courage to challenge the status quo and the vision to deliver bold, creative solutions to address our community’s everyday challenges — from homelessness and public safety to small business support and affordability. These issues are complex, but through grit, grace, and a relentless work ethic, I know I am the leader Orlando needs to move us forward into the future.”
Eskamani further added that her goal was to add a “people-centered approach” to politics. During her time in the Florida House, she was an ardent supporter of abortion.
She fought against a bill that would protect pain-capable preborn children from abortion, and attempted to overturn pro-life laws in Florida — like a 24-hour waiting period, limits on taxpayer funding for abortion organizations, and laws allowing patient records to be reviewed during abortion facility inspections.
Additionally, she was involved in the failed campaign to make abortion a constitutional right in Florida. Throughout her political career, she has made it clear that supporting the abortion industry is still a priority for her.
“More and more attacks are coming our way and it’s important that we don’t just surrender,” she has previously said. “Winning is not measured by passing a bill. It’s measured by how hard we fight.”
