France vs Senegal: The Key Insights
- France are the clear favourites with the Opta supercomputer for this clash, given a win probability of 64.8% to Senegal’s 14.9%.
- Kylian Mbappé has scored more goals than any other player across the last two World Cups.
- Senegal have kept only one clean sheet in their 12 World Cup matches.
France begin their quest to join some extremely esteemed company with a testing 2026 World Cup opener against Senegal on Tuesday.
Les Bleus finished as runners-up to Argentina in a classic final in Qatar four years ago, having triumphed in Russia back in 2018.
They are now aiming to become just the third team to reach three consecutive World Cup finals after West Germany (1982-1990), and Brazil (1994-2002).
Moreover, France have reached the final in four of the last seven editions (1998, 2006, 2018, and 2022), which is twice as many as any other nation in that span.
Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappé was the protagonist of France’s strong World Cup showings in 2018 and 2022, scoring the most goals (12) over those two tournaments. That tally puts him level with Brazil great Pelé, and only four adrift of the all-time record held by Miroslav Klose.

Those 12 goals included a hat-trick in the 2022 final, which saw him become only the second player to achieve the feat in the showpiece game after Geoff Hurst for England in 1966.
France are making their 17th World Cup appearance, and their eighth consecutive participation, which marks the longest streak in their history. Les Bleus are two-time champions, and are the last team to have won the World Cup as hosts, 28 years ago in 1998.
Didier Deschamps was France captain on that occasion, and he is one of three individuals to win the tournament as both a player and head coach, along with Mário Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer.
This fixture will mark Deschamps’ 20th World Cup match as France boss, with only Helmut Schön managing more with a single team (25, with West Germany).
Senegal are no strangers to upset World Cup wins over France, having shocked them 1-0 in the opening match of the 2002 World Cup, when the European giants were entering as defending champions.
That was their first-ever participation at football’s grandest international tournament, but the African nation have now qualified for a fourth time after 2002 (quarter-final), 2018 (group stage), and 2022 (round of 16).
This is their third straight World Cup, which marks the joint-longest ongoing streak for an African team alongside both Morocco and Tunisia.
However, Senegal’s only ever World Cup clean sheet came in that aforementioned 1-0 victory over France; they have conceded in each of the 11 matches they have played since then.
Senegal had a strong qualifying campaign, going unbeaten and topping their group ahead of DR Congo, while they also initially won the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year. However, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) later reversed the decision and awarded it to Morocco following late controversy around a penalty give to the hosts in the final that led to Senegal leaving the pitch.
Sadio Mané, Senegal’s all-time leading goalscorer, was his side’s leading marksman in qualifying, with five. The 34-year-old has only participated in one previous World Cup, playing all three games in 2018.

Head coach Pape Thiaw was an unused substitute for Senegal’s win over France in 2002, and indeed made just one appearance in that tournament. He did, though, provide the assist for Henri Camara’s golden goal against Sweden in their last-16 clash. This marks his first World Cup as a head coach.
France vs Senegal Head-to-Head
France may be the favourites to emerge victorious in this clash, but one of their lowest World Cup moments came against Senegal back in 2002.
Entering the tournament in Japan and South Korea as defending champions, a star-studded side were shocked 1-0 by then tournament debutants Senegal in Seoul.

Papa Bouba Diop scored the winner on that occasion, while current head coach Thiaw was a part of the squad that would go on to reach the quarter-finals.
For France, it was the start of a desperately poor tournament that saw them crash out of the groups with just a solitary point.
They’ve lost three of their last four World Cup group matches against African teams, the 1-0 loss to Senegal was followed by a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in 2010, and a 1-0 reverse to Tunisia in 2022. The only exception was a 2-0 triumph over Togo in 2006.
France vs Senegal Prediction
