Friends of the “person of interest” last seen with University of Pittsburgh student Sudishka Konanki before she vanished in the Dominican Republic have publicly stated their support.
“The Rock Rapids community stands behind and supports Joshua Riibe and his family,” read a statement released late Sunday by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office on behalf of “friends of the Riibe family” in Iowa, hours before he is scheduled to be interviewed again about the missing 20-year-old he was seen hugging on camera.
“The Riibe family moved to town in 2015 and has been active in various school and community events and organizations. They are well-known and loved.
“Josh has an unwavering devotion to his faith and a genuine kindness toward others,” the statement continued.
“He exemplifies the values of compassion, respect and integrity that are fundamental to our church and our community.”
Riibe has been identified as a person of interest in the March 6 disappearance, but not accused of any wrongdoing.
He remains near the Punta Cana, telling NBC News he is “trying to help” authorities.
“The ocean is a dangerous place,” he said, suggesting Konanki drowned as he passed out drunk on the beach.
