The number of marriages in China has decreased again, with 4.747 million marriages recorded in the first three quarters of 2024, a drop of 16.6 per cent year on year.
But according to the Chinese matchmaking website Jiayuan, the dating market remains strong as younger generations were more open to that culture.
Among potential dates, a new “monkey-type man” has become a hot pick.
The definition first appeared on mainland social media describing male celebrities with fit bodies and big eyes like monkeys, such as actor Wu Lei, actor and singer Wang Hedi, and talk show performer Fu Hang, in contrast to “mouse-type man” and “dog-type man”.
“Monkey men might not look serious because of their good sense of humour, but they are reliable when you really need them,” one online observer said.
