Game dev reveals terrifying monster made from photos of his sleeping wife

An indie game developer used images of his sleeping wife to create a Silent Hill-style boss monster, and the results are absolutely terrifying.

Horror games are often at their best when they take something cute or wholesome and morph it into something creepy.

If you’ve ever been unfortunate enough to cross paths with Resident Evil Village’s stomach-churning baby monster (I still get nightmares), read any of Junji Ito’s body horror manga, or been jumpscared by Silent Hill f’s multi-headed doll enemy, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

However, it’s not every day that you hear about a dev using their own wife to create a cursed monster that gives Konami’s own creepy creatures a run for their money.

Sleeping wife becomes creepy video game boss

The dev behind the dark fantasy turn-based RPG, Billy the Hero, uploaded an image of how they created one of the game’s most horrifying creatures.

“The monster that took me the longest to create, mainly because the relationship took over 20 years to incubate,” wrote JOJOJOJOsoft on Reddit. “As an indie dev looking for inspiration around the house, what could be better than turning my own wife into the boss?”

According to JOJOJOJOsoft, he stealthily took photos of his sleeping wife, who had been staying up late baking for their children. He revealed that the mixture of lighting and his wife’s “very deep sleep” made the perfect reference photos for a monster he was cooking up.

“Deep sleep gives that raw, natural look. If she were awake, her natural instinct would be to pose and try to look pretty. We need monster material here,” wrote JOJOJOJOsoft.

After the dev had snapped a few photos of his sleepy wife, he cut out the faces and arranged them into the multi-headed human hand monster you see below. However, the soon-to-be sofa sleeper wasn’t satisfied with his creation, as he needed to add even more eye-catching features.

“I reduced the saturation of all colors to a grayscale, then layered with colors to adjust lighting and shadows, and overlaid with raw textures…Added some red in the crevices, painted in some veins, tendons, and fleshy connections. Ta-da! After some final color grading, she is ready to be unleashed. You can now queue up to spam your skills on her,” he continued.

As you can imagine, comments have absolutely loved the dev’s creativity but have warned him that his in-game actions may have real-world consequences.

“Do not show this to her. This is what lawyers find filed under ‘reasons for divorce,’” joked one commenter. “Setting a reminder to check the post in two weeks to see if it’s been updated to ‘ex-wife’” added another.

The dev’s wife is taking things very well, as you can see.

Time will soon tell if this brave dev will be spending more time in his living room or if he’s having to play his own IRL survival horror game. And, judging from the photo we’ve attached above, it looks like things have taken a step in the right direction (sorry!).

While Billy the Hero doesn’t currently have a release date, it’s set to release on PC via Steam and features plenty of creepy creatures that you’ll need to kill to avoid a grizzly death.
