GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen is reportedly considering ditching the $56 billion takeover of eBay, with other suggestions in play for it.
Back in early May, GameStop formally offered to acquire eBay, with CEO Ryan Cohen laying out his plan for the move after a few days of rumors and speculation about a possible bid for the platform.
GameStop offered to pay $125 per share, using a mix of cash and stock, and would use eBay to expand its core business of gaming retail. eBay stated that it had “received an unsolicited, non-binding acquisition proposal from GameStop.”
Despite saying they’d had no discussions with the retail brand, the online shopping platform said they would “carefully review” the offer.
GameStop might drop eBay bid
Now, however, Cohen is reportedly considering dropping the deal and shifting to a partnership with eBay instead.
The report, which comes from Bloomberg, states that the GameStop CEO “is considering proposing a partnership or joint venture that would enable eBay to leverage GameStop’s roughly 1,600 US retail locations.”
On top of that, GameStop would “seek representation on eBay’s board as part of any partnership.”

It comes as GameStop’s share price has fallen, while eBay is up almost 4%, with Bloomberg stating that Cohen hasn’t made a “final decision” on the move just yet.
Previously, Cohen has even tried to sell his personal collection of gaming memorabilia, sports cards, and GameStop items via eBay to get more money for the deal. “I’m selling stuff on eBay to pay for eBay,” he said on X (formerly Twitter).
The CEO has also said that PlayStation’s move to ditch physical media “doesn’t matter at all,” despite gamers being concerned about owning digital games that they’re paying for. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said that physical discs “don’t really make sense” for big releases like GTA 6.
GameStop’s stock has been the source of plenty of fun over the last few years, with plenty of people jumping on the “meme stock” train.
