Gavin Newsom confirms he’ll sit down with radical Dem Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan: ‘Someone who gets it’

Gavin Newsom has confirmed he will meet with radical Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed as he campaigns with Democrats in the battleground state of Michigan.

During a C-SPAN broadcast, a reporter asked the governor Sunday whether he intends to meet with El-Sayed, to which Newsom confirmed, “I’ll be meeting with him tomorrow.”

He continued: “The Senate is in play, and it will go through this state. Getting behind him is going to be important. That’s going to require not just the party here, but support outside of Michigan.”

Touching on El-Sayed’s appeal, Newsom highlighted that while some people aren’t supportive of him, they are very appreciative of how he’s handled himself thus far.

He said: “My observation is he seems to be moving at a pretty impressive clip. It’s about unity, and these larger/smaller events, including the ones we’ll have tomorrow, are indicative of someone who gets it.”

The visit comes as the California governor continues expanding his national political footprint while publicly weighing a 2028 White House bid.

His political operation says the Michigan trip is aimed at boosting Democratic candidates ahead of November’s midterms, placing him squarely in the middle of one of the cycle’s biggest political storylines.

But not everyone shares the same sentiment when it comes to El-Sayyed as Vice President JD Vance ripped radical Michigan Senate candidate on Saturday, predicting he’d be a “terrible senator” if elected.

“I think the guy’s crazy and would be a terrible senator for the people of Michigan, Vance told Fox News days after El-Sayed’s remarkable victory in Michigan’s Senate Democratic primary — and after the anti-Israel Dem mocked him for “sucking up to power.”

“We’re going to make that case, and obviously, the people of Michigan are going to make their vote,” added Vance, who called El-Sayed an “odd guy.”

El-Sayed is running against former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.), who lost his last race by only 20,000 votes in 2024.
