"Jesus tells a story in Matthew chapter 18, in which a servant is forgiven of an enormous debt by his master. Yet shortly afterwards, the forgiven man refuses to show mercy to a fellow servant who owes him a far smaller sum, and when the master finds out about this, he's rightly outraged to be forgiven a huge sermon than to refuse to forgive someone else, a far smaller one.

"Christians believe the record of our sins against God is beyond measure, but that Jesus has taken away that record. Nailing it to the cross. And so I gently asked this Christian man who came to see me. What has Jesus done with the record of our wrongs against him?

"And that was all I really needed to say. Those who are good at forgiving aren't those who are good. It's those who are forgiven. What I mean is, those who are best at forgiving are those who know of how much they have been forgiven. And so if you're carrying around a dossier, a record of someone else's failures, the answer is to discover what Jesus has done with ours."
