"Many of us approach God in much the same way. Give me another chance, God. We think, and I'll do better. I'll make up for the past and become the kind of person that you can finally accept.
"But here's the thing, the King in Jesus story does not offer a longer payment schedule. He cancels the debt.
"Jesus here is giving us an insight into God's incredible grace. God's forgiveness is not earned by a convincing promise to improve. In Christ, the debt we could never clear is paid for us at the cross, and all he invites us to do is to receive him.
"Now, of course, that forgiveness changes us. God's grace teaches us to change and to become more merciful ourselves. But change. Living follows forgiveness. It does not purchase it."
