"For Christians, empathy begins with the amazing idea that God became human. God became one of us. Jesus was born, grew up, lived, and died as an ordinary person. That's far more than walking a mile in someone else's shoes. And God's empathy for us meant Jesus became one of us and died for our sake.

"So later on, Christians would write things like rejoice with those who rejoice. Mourn with those who mourn. If God empathises with us, we should empathise with others. In our polarised world, it can seem impossible to have empathy with those who are very different from us."
