"And wouldn't it be wonderful if we could do something similar in life, avoiding all the bullets that life fires at us? But it doesn't take long in life to discover that we can't.
"We face sickness, anxiety, redundancy, loneliness, heartbreak, and finally death. The bullet none of us can dodge. The question is how we respond to that reality.
"The Bible speaks of a different kind of hope, not mere optimism, but a solid confidence about the future. Christians follow a God who suffered and died, a hero who didn't dodge the bullets but took them for us, and then rose again, and now promises life beyond death to all who trust in him.
"When we read in the Bible things like be joyful in hope, patient in affliction. That's not a command to rustle up a cheerful disposition. It's an invitation to look beyond the bullets to the hero who took the hit, overcame the grave, and has promised to those who trust in him a future in which suffering will be no more.
"Elsewhere in the Bible we read, we have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure, that hate can be yours and mine today, through faith in Jesus Christ."
