“Jesus told a tiny story in the Gospels. It's almost a throwaway line. A man stumbles on a treasure hidden in a field that was buried, and in his joy, he sold everything he had to get that field.
“Jesus lingers not on the sacrifice, but the emotion. He did everything for joy. Christians read this as a portrait of the kingdom of God, something so overwhelmingly wonderful that it makes you revalue everything else in its light, makes people willing to give up everything with joy to get it.
“Now, wonderfully, that's also a picture of the Christian gospel, where Jesus Christ himself searched and found and gave up everything to find us.
“He was willing to give up everything to win people like you and like me. I think discovering that kind of love is what makes Jesus followers think his kingdom is worth everything.
“I wonder for you, is there something you have found that is worth giving up everything for? Because that's the kind of thing Jesus says his kingdom actually is.”
