"Those weren't random guesses. Elijah was the firing miracles prophet expected to return before God's great day of judgment. Jeremiah wept over a nation that had wandered far from God. John the Baptist had just been executed for calling powerful people to turn back to God.
"Every guess was true enough, but not the whole story. Each borrowed a real feature of the real Jesus his power, his sorrow, his willingness to speak truth to power. And all these historical characters were signposts pointing to a greater one still to come.
"It was common to see Jesus standing in a great line of great prophets and teachers. But the key question for those first disciples was is he more than a prophet? Their answer to that question change their lives and change the course of history.
"With Jesus, I have found it takes all 66 books in this Bible in 33,000 verses to pen an adequate, glorious portrait. But it still takes a lifetime to get to know him more and more truly."
