Gen Z is Quiet Quitting Higher Education for Trade Schools

Early last year, The Independent Review published an intriguing article: Hyperpoliticization of Higher Ed Trends in Faculty Political Ideology, 1969–Present.

The authors, Phillip W. Magness (senior research faculty and director of research and education at the American Institute for Economic Research) and David Waugh (managing editor at the American Institute for Economic Research), assessed complex data obtained from surveys that evaluated the political views of higher education faculty [e.g., Carnegie Commission on Higher Education Faculty Survey (1969–1984), UCLA-Higher Education Research Institute Faculty Survey (1989–2016)]. The information confirms trends that Legal Insurrection has long noted: Since 2001, 2001 higher education faculty positions have taken a hard, and “professors on the political left are now approaching a supermajority.”

While their findings are interesting, a question they pose about the future consequences of this development is prescient.

A hyperpoliticized academy does not bode well for students, faculty, or anyone interested in serious learning. For many students and for an increasing share of the general public, this has turned the educational experience from one of intellectual pursuit into pure activist sophistry. The only remaining question, then, is how long the public will continue to pay for a university system that no longer aligns with its values or educational priorities.

The answer is: Not much longer.

Many of us predicted this was coming a couple years ago. Gen Z are turning out to be more conservative than the generation before them. And the government's action during Covid, the increasing scam of "higher education", and ridiculous debt incurred to get a degree, has them looking at trade Schools rather than the usual colleges and universities.

That’s great.

I’ve seen that in the homeschool community. When my oldest graduated, virtually all went to college. My youngest is 25. Most of his friend, including him went into trades. He’s a professional trucker and the family hero. He put his life on the line when a bus full of kids pulled directly in is path. He destroyed a dump truck but saved 40 lives.

College is a colossal waste unless you’re going into a hard science type pursuit.

I bet most young men are doing this. I can’t imagine my younger self (back in the early 1990s) who liked country music and other non PC things being part of the university scene nowadays.

I’ll take a great plumber over a college professor.

The tech/vocational school in my area now has four campuses. It originally opened in 1958 in one small building and has been expanding ever since. It offers approx 130 degrees and certifications in areas such as accounting, auto tech, computer repair, medical tech, AC repair, truck driving etc.

They also offer free classes for students to obtain their GED along with tuition assistance scholarships to allow low-income students get a degree or certification which will allow them to succeed in life. Most graduates intern in their field for the last quarter and are already employed by the time they actually graduate.

We need more technical schools available for students instead of more high-priced indoctrination centers.

It is good news. Young men need to learn a trade of some kind, learn how to use the mind and body in productive work, maybe start a business and make a good buck.

If this trend continues maybe it will mean more American jobs for American men.

And women. Young women are doing this too.

The "woke" stuff is in thge STEM fields, too.

College is NOT a waste if you are careful about where you go and which courses you pick. For some of us, college is NOT just to get job credentials. It is for forming the whole man, and also for passing on the philosophical underpinnings of Western Civilization (When done right).

If all conservatives go to STEM andTrade Schools, you are abandoning the court system and the political machinery (the state, not necessarily Deep) to the enemy.

I am in IT, and I have worked with IT workers with degrees in Psychology, Humanities, Sociology, English and Philosophy. My own degree is in Political Science.

Plumbing is the noblest profession on Earth.

It’s what separates a superior civilization from and inferior one.

Why would any white male go to college? You are the bottom of the totem pole.

I discovered that the hard sciences are political, too - in this day and age.

You don't so much have to learn the science - just how to mimic your mentor(s).

Gen Z women are more to the left than ever (and they are not rushing off to trade school).

The overselling of college to young men is indeed being rolled back a bit with Gen Z.

No b=doubt they are political, but it’s about the only thing you really need higher education for.

As an example, one of my daughters is a book editor. Most of hers are in the education sector but she was a proofreader for a bonafide best seller. She only has an associates from community college.

Smart companies should shift toward On The Job training. Virtually any cubicle job can be given to an 18-year-old as long as you train them and help them learn and succeed.
